Western NSW Local Health District (LHD) will welcome the Chair of the National Mental Health Commission Professor Alan Fels and fellow Commissioners this week (21 November and 22 November 2012.)
Professor Fels and Commissioners will visit the Bloomfield Mental Health Campus as part of its official Commission meeting, being held in Orange.
Western NSW LHD Director of Mental Health, Drug and Alcohol Dr Russell Roberts said it is a great opportunity for Orange and the Central West to host the group.
The National Health Commission recognises the importance of visiting rural communities to ensure a truly national perspective.
“The Commission is particularly interested to talk about the challenges and innovations in mental health,” Dr Roberts said.
The Commission reports to the Prime Minister and works closely with the Hon Mark Butler MP, who has been appointed as Minister Assisting the Prime Minister on Mental Health Reform, in recognition of the importance of taking a national and cross-sectoral leadership approach to mental health reform.
The National Commission is visiting sites to see services ‘first hand’ and to meet with members of the community. The Commission will host an afternoon tea on Wednesday to introduce itself and discuss its role, including the development of its first report “A Contributing Life: the 2012 National Report Card on Mental Health and Suicide Prevention”, and encourage members of the community to ask questions and share their views.
“Rural and regional communities experience significant and different challenges in relation to the provision of mental health services.
“The Bloomfield Campus is certainly recognised at the national and indeed international level as a leader in the provision of innovative and many mental health care services. We are delighted the Commission has chosen to visit us and look forward to hearing the update,” said Dr Roberts.
The Commission’s afternoon tea is being held at the Kokoda Room, Orange Ex-Services Club, Anson Street Orange on Wednesday 21 November from 2.30-4.30pm. Media is invited to attend.
