Got A Wound? Get A Wound Expert In Orange

It’s a little known fact that an estimated 400,000 Australians suffer with chronic wounds. This all too common health condition causes pain, discomfort, greatly restricts mobility and creates distress and social isolation. People in our local community can suffer months or years, which is far too long.

The good news is that there are wound experts who can help, and this is the message being sent during national Wound Awareness Week, taking place from 24 - 28 March 2014.

The theme for this year’s wound awareness week is ‘Got a wound? Get a Wound Expert’, which aims to raise awareness about where people can go to find their nearest wound expert.

For people in Orange and surrounding areas, Orange Health Service offers wound clinics and wound care for outpatients through the Ambulatory Care Unit.

Stomal Therapy and Wound Management Clinical Nurse Consultant Joe Webster said that expert wound care has the potential to halve the healing time of conditions such as venous leg ulcers to within 12 weeks.

“This means less use of GPs, community care and hospitals, and a greatly reduced financial burden on the public health system,” he said.

According to the Australian Wound Management Association (AWMA), wounds cost the health system $10,000 per patient at an estimated $3billion per year.

“Chronic wounds can be painful, messy, embarrassing and isolating so it’s important that people know that help is available to assist with the management of these wounds to help them heal more efficiently,” Mr Webster said.

This Wound Awareness Week, Western NSW Local Health District (LHD) will also be focusing on reducing the incidences of pressure injuries in their patients. Pressure ulcers are largely preventable but are recognised internationally as a major patient safety problem. They are caused by unrelieved pressure resulting in damage to underlying tissue.
