Local health workers from across the area will be getting together on Friday in Bathurst to find out more about the Get Healthy Information and Coaching Service.
Presented by Michelle Maxwell, Manager of Get Healthy Service, Office of Preventive Health NSW, the Get Healthy Service Roadshows aim to both increase the awareness of and the number of referrals to the Get Healthy Service.
Karen Lloyd, Health Promotion Officer with Western NSW Local Health District said the Roadshows are a fantastic opportunity to find out firsthand the effectiveness of the Get Healthy Information and Coaching Service and how staff can better utilise this service for clients and their local communities.
“The Get Healthy Service aims to reduce the risk of individuals developing chronic diseases. Chronic diseases, in particular cardiovascular disease, diabetes, chronic lower respiratory diseases and lifestyle related cancers, affect many within our communities and account for 46 per cent of preventable deaths within the Western NSW Local Health District,” she said.
Evaluation of the Get Healthy Service showed that participants who completed the 6 month program lost an average 3.9kgs and 5cm off their waist.
“In addition to losing weight, participants also increased their physical activity levels, ate more fruit and vegetables and decreased the amount of sweetened drinks consumed daily. These are encouraging results as we all try to reduce the incidence of chronic diseases within our communities,” she said.
The Roadshows will cover topics such as the impact of the GHS on health outcomes, how to access and utilise the Get Healthy Service and initiatives for participants who have type 2 diabetes, are Aboriginal or have gestational diabetes. In addition to this, participants will also find out about the Go 4 Fun program on offer for kids aged 7 to 13 years.
The Bathurst Roadshow is one of three taking place this week throughout the Western district, with Bourke on Tuesday and Dubbo on Thursday.
The Get Healthy Service Roadshow is a partnership between the Ministry of Health, Western NSW Local Health District and the Western and Far West Medicare Locals.
The Get Healthy Coaching and Information Service is a free telephone based service that is ideal for rural residents to access professional information. People can refer themselves by phoning 1300 806 258.
