Between 2010 and 2015, 24* four people lost their lives to suicide in the Lachlan Area Command - 50 percent of those deaths were in the Parkes Shire and 80 percent were males.
A steering committee has now been formed to run an event to raise awareness around suicide with the view to start the development of a Suicide Awareness Group for the area. The aim of this group would be to keep suicide awareness on the social radar and help the wider community to identify the signs, know how to help the person they are worried about and where to get help.
“Let’s Stand Together to Prevent Suicide” is a community event for all people living in the Lachlan Area Command which covers the Parkes, Forbes and Lachlan Shire. It will take place on Tuesday, 22 March 2016 at Parkes Showground from 3.00pm to 7.30 pm with a BBQ dinner at 5.00pm.
Speakers on the day include:
· Dan Hunt – NRL Ambassador for the NRL “State of Mind” Program
· Dr Tristam Duncan – Psychiatrist from Orange
· A “Beyondblue" ambassador sharing his journey through depression with a message of hope, recovery and resiliance
· Representative from Wesley Mission
The event is being organised by Western NSW Local Health District in partnership with the Rural Adversity Mental Health Program (RAMPH), Local Land Service, Department of Primary Industries, Centacare Wilcannia/Forbes, Richmond PRA, CMOC Northparkes Mines, NSW Farmers Association, House With No Steps, Parkes Shire Council, Forbes Shire Council and Lachlan Shire Council.
