The Marty Gordon Memorial Committee are again generously donating equipment to Dubbo Hospital.
This Committee was formed ten years ago to honour one of Dubbo’s highly respected Aboriginal community members, Mr Marty Gordon who lost his battle with cancer in 2006. The Committee aims to help raise funds to purchase items for Dubbo Hospital.
This year’s donation will be given to the Dubbo Hospital Oncology Unit and includes educational and training items valued at $2,500.
The donation has helped purchase an educational program to teach those who could potentially receive a port-a-cath (an implanted device to access the deep veins of the body) how they are used and the advantages of having one.
The other donated item is a training mannequin that helps nurses develop skills in accessing complex devices which have been inserted into the deep veins of the arms and torso to preserve the shallow veins of the arms in those undergoing chemotherapy treatments.
Acting Nursing Unit Manager of the Oncology Unit, Timothy Williams said the donation will go to very good use at Dubbo Hospital.
“I am delighted with the donation, as the equipment will help our patients and will have the ability to increase the skills of nursing staff members to deliver patient care,” Mr Williams said.
“With the increasing prevalence of port-a-caths comes the need to educate staff across the facility about how to safely access these devices. These donated items will help us do just that.”
Program Manager from Mission Australia, Elizabeth Havelka said that the Committee is very proud of the donations they have made to Dubbo Hospital over many years.
“The Committee is very proud of the donations they have made over the years to Oncology, Dialysis, G Ward, Palliative Care, Cardiac Rehab and Operating Theatres with the total now being many tens of thousands of dollars donated,” Ms Havelka said.
“We appreciate the support we get form the Dubbo community to provide these donations.”
The Marty Gordon Memorial Committee would like to thank the support from their sponsors. A list of sponsors can be obtained by contacting Mission Australia.
