Aboriginal Maternal and Infant Health Service (AMIHS)

This service is for all women whose baby identifies as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander. Your care will be based on your needs and choices.

During your pregnancy (antenatal) and after the baby is born (postnatal) you will be provided with care that is culturally appropriate and you can get to know a Midwife and Aboriginal Health Worker, who will continue to provide you with care until your baby is eight weeks old.  The AMIHS Service is also offered in some surrounding towns.

Maternity Antenatal/ Postnatal Program (MAPP)

MAPP provides you with a midwife/s who cares for you prior to the birth of your baby and afterwards at home. The MAPP midwife will not care for you during your labour and birth, this will be attended by the hospital based midwives and doctors. Your labour and birth may occur at Forbes, Orange, Dubbo or other hospitals depending on your needs and those of your baby. This will be discussed and explained during pregnancy so you will know in advance.

MAPP is for all women who wish to have shared care with a midwife and an obstetrician and has a focus on women with health conditions and more complex pregnancies. Your care will be based on your needs and choices.

This program is also available to you if you plan to have most of your care with a midwife or with a private doctor.  All women on this program need to have at least two planned antenatal appointments with a MAPP midwife to qualify for the program and postnatal midwifery visits at home.

Contact us on (02) 6861 2439 for more information or to register your interest. You can also download the MAPP brocure.

Midwifery Group Practice (MGP)

Midwifery Group Practice (MGP) provides you with a midwife who cares for you during your pregnancy, your birth journey and afterwards. The midwives work together in a small group.

MGP is for women with a low risk pregnancy, the midwives will provide most of your care. Midwives are trained specialists in normal pregnancy, childbirth and postnatal care. The MGP can consult with a staff specialist obstetrician during pregnancy.

Your labour and birth will occur at your choice of either Parkes or Forbes hospitals and be attended by two midwives. Early discharge home for well mothers and babies is planned and will be discussed with you at an early stage in your pregnancy. Your midwife will continue to visit you and your baby at home for up to six weeks.

Contact us on (02) 6861 2439 for more information or to register your interest. You can also download the MGP brocure.

Private care with a GP or specialist doctor

GPs with training in obstetrics or specialist doctors (obstetricians) can provide care for women with pregnancies that are progressing normally, as well as women with health conditions or complications of pregnancy.

This choice is available for all women.  Your doctor will guide you and arrange appointments as required. The chosen hospital for the labour and birth will be planned and agreed with your doctor.

The first booking appointment will occur early in your pregnancy ideally before 14 weeks with a midwife so that you are booked in to the hospital to have your baby. This appointment will be as close to home as possible. If you choose a private doctor you may be able to also have a MAPP midwife.

Local GP obstetricians or specialist obstetricians may be recommended by friends and family or located via on- line search engines.

This is a 24/7 service staffed by our team of hospital based midwives who work on a shift basis to staff the birthing suite and the maternity ward.

You will be able to meet some of the midwives in this team if you come to Forbes hospital during your pregnancy or at the birth. The midwives will care for you in hospital after the birth of your baby.
